Fly through of the planned WA Comprehensive Cancer Centre

Release of Australian Cancer Plan welcomed

The Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research (the Perkins) welcomes the release of the Australian Cancer Plan. It is a great step forward for a consistent, national approach to cancer care for all Australians.

The Perkins was involved in the consultation process as part of our plans to develop a Comprehensive Cancer Centre for Western Australia. We’re excited to see that a national network of comprehensive cancer centres forms the foundation of the Plan to deliver consistent, better cancer care for all Australians. The business case for the Comprehensive Cancer Centre for WA is being developed.

  • Most people are affected by cancer in some way.

There are more than 50,000 West Australians currently living with cancer.

People living with cancer in WA receive excellent clinical care; however, their cancer journey can be fragmented and difficult to navigate. Services are high quality but rarely focused on the whole person. There are many who cannot access timely care.

About 50 West Australians a year travel to the eastern states to receive cancer treatment.

  • Comprehensive cancer centres use a model of care that is person-centred, integrated, research-based and delivered through multi-disciplinary teams working with co-located services.

The WA Comprehensive Cancer Centre will bring together world-class diagnosis and treatment, holistic care, innovative research, clinical trials and education in a state-of-the-art purpose built facility at the QEII Medical Centre.

The person affected by cancer will be at the heart of all the centre does. Health providers will work in partnership with consumers to determine their care needs and deliver coordinated and comprehensive treatment using a multidisciplinary team of clinicians and allied health professionals.

The WA Comprehensive Cancer Centre will be a not-for-profit, autonomous comprehensive cancer centre, which treats people with all types of cancer. It will offer a transformative model of care in a safe and supportive environment, acting as a beacon of best practice for all cancer care in WA and as a sanctuary for those treated there.

The centre will integrate excellent and comprehensive clinical care, the translational cancer research program at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research and Linear Clinical Research.

It will use outreach, education and cutting edge technology platforms to serve WA’s rural and remote regions and Aboriginal communities, where cancer experiences and outcomes lag behind metropolitan areas.

    • Improved survival with earlier access to latest treatments and technology in a model of best practice care.

    • A bespoke, integrated, coordinated and comprehensive cancer journey for all West Australians based on their individual needs to improve quality of life during treatment and beyond.

    • Greater access to trials of the latest cancer drugs and treatments.

    • World-leading cancer research integrated into every aspect of the cancer journey, underpinning delivery of world’s best cancer care.

    • Reducing the gap in cancer outcomes for rural and remote, vulnerable and disadvantaged communities and for those with complex cancers.

    • Attract doctors and researchers to the State and help stop the ‘brain drain’ of professionals out of WA.

    • Implement cutting edge technology platforms for state-wide benefit.

    • Accelerate commercialisation of research discoveries for desired health impact.

    • A collaboration between WA’s smartest cancer minds.

    • Creation of hundreds of new jobs.

  • The proposal is to develop a Comprehensive Cancer Centre where care is centred upon and coordinated around the needs of people affected by cancer to offer them the best experiences and outcomes right here in WA. The 10-storey WA Comprehensive Cancer Centre will be dedicated solely to cancer patient care. It includes hundreds of new beds dedicated for cancer care, a dedicated intensive care unit and operating theatres. It comprises:

    • 140 overnight and inpatient beds

    • 110 chemotherapy, medical and same day beds and chairs

    • Up to 20 intensive care beds

    • 40 beds/chairs for clinical trials by Linear Clinical Research

    • 10 operating theatres

    On site services will include:

    • Medical, nursing, and allied health professionals dedicated to providing the best clinical and psychosocial care to meet people's needs

    • Chemotherapy, Medical oncology, Haematology and radiation oncology

    • Imaging

    • Pharmacy

    • Palliative care

    • Day medical services

    • CAR T cell therapy suite

    • Community wellness with a focus on complimentary therapies

    • Gymnasium

    • Provision for 350 parking bays

Integrating excellent clinical care and cancer services, the Perkins’ translational cancer research and Linear Clinical Research will create a state-of-the-art research and clinical trial facility in one purpose-built, permanent and sustainable asset for WA. Cutting edge technology will drive advances in new diagnostics, therapy and preventive strategies.

Incorporating the lived experience of people in WA into all aspects of the Project - the WA Comprehensive Cancer Centre will embrace best practice health care and research which involves people with cancer and/or their carers at all levels of the project, and in their treatment once the centre opens. Check the “Our Community” page for more information.

The WA Comprehensive Cancer Centre will deliver person-centred cancer care. Bringing together world-class multi-disciplinary cancer care, innovative research and clinical trials for the WA community in one purpose-built iconic 21st century facility.
